*THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER**LONGLISTED FOR THE ANDRÉ SIMON FOOD AND DRINK BOOK AWARDS*The groundbreaking new book from Tim Spector, bestselling author of The Diet Myth and creator of the COVID Symptom Study app. 'Illuminating and so incredibly timely.' Yotam OttolenghiWe are all bombarded with advice about what we should and shouldn't eat, and new scientific discoveries are announced every day. Yet the more we are told about nutrition, the less we seem to understand.Through his pioneering scientific research, Tim Spector has been shocked to discover how little good evidence there is for many of our most deep-rooted ideas about food. In a series of short, myth-busting chapters, Spoon-Fed reveals why almost everything we've been told about food is wrong. Spector explores the scandalous lack of good science behind many medical and government food recommendations, and how the food industry holds sway over these policies and our choices.Spoon-Fed is a groundbreaking book that forces us to question every diet plan, official recommendation, miracle cure or food label we encounter, and encourages us to rethink our whole relationship with food. Diet may be the most important medicine we all possess. We urgently need to learn how best to use it, not just for our health as individuals but for the future of the planet. 'One of the clearest and most accessible short nutrition books I have read: refreshingly open-minded, deeply informative and free of faddish diet rules.' Bee Wilson, Guardian'This book should be available on prescription.' Felicity Cloake, Literary Review

Five stars for a well-researched book on debunking the myths perpetuated by the food industry, governments and medical health professionals.Tim Spector tackles the myths surrounding the use of vitamins, salt reduction, calorie counting, drinking water safety, low fat diet, plus many others. Myths that have succeeded in making many people afraid of what they eat. In some cases that may well be a good thing – junk food is simply bad for us. Sugar, salt and fat-laced junk “foods”, with virtually no nutrition, are designed for one thing only – lining the pockets of food companies, while those of us who eat their fare fall ill, potentially developing serious health problems, including diabetes, obesity and many other related illnesses.Tim returns to the microbiome, our second brain, noting the calories-in, calories-out myth ignores the widely differing ways humans digest everyday foods in our guts.Tim Spector provides an overview of the inherent naivety of accepting health claims made by the food industry, with their financial lobbying of governments designed to prevent taxes being raised on junk “food”. He also covers pesticides used to spray the food we ingest, pointing to an increasing number of studies linking poisons to an increase in blood cancers. Those who eat organic foods have been demonstrated to have lower risks of cancer. There will come a day when future generations look back at deliberate obfuscation by the food industry on nutrition and the determination to keep people in ignorance about food production and wonder why governments were complicit.Tim Spector touches on the inadequacy of medical training when it comes to nutrition. GPs in our modern world inevitably face many patients with obesity and diabetic health issues, yet a disturbingly miniscule part of medical training focuses on dealing with nutritional and lifestyle advice.Ultimately, Tim concludes with generic tips on eating healthy foods, especially a wide variety of vegetables, avoiding junk, and getting mad with the food industry and governments kowtowing to them. The best way for consumers to have their say is to vote with our wallets and not buy rubbish, to avoid plastic containers where possible – especially purchased water with its hidden microplastics, and if we’re politically minded we can also lobby our governments in protest against financial pressuring by greedy food companies. If we need to look further for detailed information, Tim provides reams of suggested reading through articles, journals and books at the end of his overview.
