I would consider this book a requisite strength programming manual. If you have been struggling with plateaus or are beating yourself into the ground only to de-load and ramp back up to the same old plateau or just want to understand strength programming and write your own programs then this book is for you.Bromley lays out strength programming as a clear, concise, and scalable framework that can accommodate any stage of strength development (Post Novice Linear Progression). That said, the primary focus is on base building, however, the methods and programming for peaking are covered as well.He does this by introducing the notion of repeating waves that contain various forms of progressive overload specific to the desired outcome or phase of development - the progressive overloading may come in the form of more reps, more sets, more weight or additional movements or some combination thereof. Bromley teaches the most effective ways to implement progressive overloading for the intermediate / advanced lifter and shows the reader how to effectively adjust reps, sets and intensities, together, in a meaningful way, at every stage of development to achieve short and long term results.The program design framework is scalable and can be tuned for years on end. The wave patterns also offer a built in feedback loop allowing the strength trainee a clear path to either repeat progression within the same area of specificity or advance to the next phase of development goals which are also clearly laid out.The schemes all make a lot of sense and are in no way overly complicated.
