Despite the title and the premise that it is based off of Suor Maria Celeste's letters this book isn't really about Galileo's Daughter and the letters are sparser than I expected. It's a biography of Galileo filled primarily with contextual prose with a letter or two per chapter. Unfortunately it seems Galileo's responses to his daughter's letters are lost so we get a sadly one sided picture until we get some snippets of his letters to others after her death to hear about her in his own words.Aside from the misleading presentation though, I found it to be a really interesting read. We get some impressions of SMC's life at convent mixing up remedies and constantly doing charitable works in addition to a much more vivid day by day of the major events of Galileo's life.I was on the fence with how to rate it because the content was interesting, but ultimately rounded down due to the misleading title and premise. SMC's practical accounts of day to day responsibilities and constant requests to offset the nuns' self imposed poverty just aren't that compelling - and wouldn't make much of a book on their own. I feel like this is a bait and switch to try and lure in a different type of audience. SMC is the light side note a biography on Galileo - you could take all her parts out of the book and still have a decent biography. I picked up the book because I was interested in her story, which turned out to be not much of a story (she spends most of her life in a convent she can't leave). Had it just been presented as a straight biography of Galileo I probably wouldn't have picked it up but that's pretty much all it is and SMC is used as a gimmick to sell it.
